The Fastest Electric Motorcycles in Australia and Beyond

If you have the need for speed and you haven’t jumped on the EV bandwagon yet, you’re being left behind. These are the five fastest electric motorcycles in Australia, plus a few extras that would get your heart racing.

 

Speed and acceleration are two of the leading areas electric motorcycles can leave their gas counterparts in the dust. If you own a high performance electric motorcycle, or you have had the chance to ride one, you understand the excitement that comes from so much power on tap and how unusual that linear power feels compared to a petrol bike. We’re used to having to constantly change gears to harness as much of the power from the engine as possible. Something you don’t need to think about with electric motorcycles that have all that power from the get go to max speed.

Australia has been a little slow in adopting electric vehicle technology, but it’s catching up. Global innovation has led to some impressive speed machines that have already made their way to our shores. Here are the fastest electric motorcycles available in Australia (plus a few of the official fastest non-production bikes available outside of Australia), showcasing their power, acceleration and cutting edge technology that is reshaping the way we ride. 

 

1. Energica Ego+ RS

Easily the fastest electric motorcycle in Australia and a bike we know all too well. Born from the MotoE series – its advanced battery management system, stylish race design, DC fast charging and exceptional range make it a practical option for both city riding and track adventures. But what about the speed? Well the Energica Ego+ RS was the bike of choice for the MotoE for several years, and the Ego’s sister, the Eva Ribelle, recently placed 5th in the MotoAmerica 2023 National Championship Race – this was the first time an electric bike went up against gas bikes. 

Top speed: Limited at 240 km/h. Unlimited 270 km/h

2. Zero SR/S

One of the most renowned names in Electric motorbikes. The Zero SR/S is one of our favourite motorcycles, it just looks so damn sleek. The slinky aerodynamic fairing hints at the true power behind this speedster. It’s a great ride that we strongly recommend you jump on if you get the chance.

Torque: 140 lb.ft (219 Nm)

3. Stark VARG

While dirt bikes aren’t typically the fastest bikes in terms of top speed – their off the line speed is hard to beat, especially off bitumen. In 2019 some ambitious engineers got together in Spain with the mission of creating an electric dirt bike that would far exceed the performance of any dirt bike available on the market, gas powered or otherwise. In 2021 they released the Stark VARG – mission accomplished – the most powerful dirt bike in production. It’s certainly the fastest electric motorcycle in terms of dirt bikes. 

One look at the Varg and you know exactly what’s going on, classic motocross design, fairings and tyres – but that’s where the similarities end. Engineered from the ground up, the Stark VARG is 30% more powerful than the top performing 450CC dirt bikes. It may not have the top speed to match some of the other bikes on this list – but in terms of speed off the mark, this bike is going to smoke almost anything else out there over short distances.

4. Savic C-Series

Our homegrown hero.  Australian-based company Savic’s C-Series of electric motorcycles are a wicked combination of style and performance. While not as high-speed as others on this list, the C-Series give a balance of speed, range and futuristic style that make it a great contender for electric motorcycle lovers.

Acceleration: 0-100 in 3.5 seconds
Torque:  147 lb.ft (200 Nm)
Power: 80 HP
Capacity: 16.3 kWh

5. Damon Hypersport

A real head turner and performance to boot! Some of the engineers from Alta setup Damon in Canada to continue their journey into performance electric motorcycles. And just like the Alta – the Damon Hypersport is breaking down electric barriers. The top speed is staggering for a production electric bike – but that’s where things get a bit unclear.

Is the Hypersport a full production motorcycle? We know Damon has secured heaps of pre-orders but it’s unclear how many of those have been fulfilled and where the company is in terms of production facilities. What we do know is they produce some sick bikes with cutting edge technology – so here’s hoping they reach our shores sooner rather than later.

6. Lightning LS-218

They definitely got the name right, the Lightning LS-218 tops the list of fastest electric motorcycles and burst onto the scene about 5 years ago and claimed the title as the fastest electric motorcycle available to order online. Its advanced aerodynamics and powerful drivetrain make it a top contender electric motorcycle. However, since that initial media attention – things have gone very quiet and it doesn’t look like the Lightning is still in production. We hope we’re wrong about that.

7. White Motorcycle Concepts

Definitely not a production motorcycle and not available to purchase in Australia! This epic White Motorcycles prototype features unique aerodynamic properties – a hole in the middle of the bike! By forcing the air through the middle of the bike the prototype reportedly reduces drag by up to 70%. Easily one of the fastest electric motorcycles in the world, the bike was tested in the Horiba MIRA Facility where those figures were verified. It hopes to smash the electric motorcycle speed record very soon.
