Touring Australia on the Energica Experia – Part 1

Adventure Awaits…

Australia’s vast landscapes and scenic roads are dream routes for motorcycle touring. Combining impressive range, the most advanced technology electric motorcycles has to offer, and extreme rider comfort, the Energica Experia is the best in the game when it comes to electric adventure tourers.

The electric Italian Stallion is the perfect bike suited for exploring the mixed terrain of Aus and is built for long distance riding. It offers features that enhance both performance and rider comfort, and we’re going to get into why it stands out as THE touring motorcycle.

Impressive Range and Fast Charging

The Experia can travel up to 420 km on a single charge in urban settings and approximately 230 km on highways. Its DC fast charging capability allows for quick top-ups, making it convenient for long trips where charging stations might be far apart.

Rider-Oriented Design

The bike features an ergonomic seat and riding position, reducing fatigue during long hours on the road. The adjustable suspension ensures a smooth ride, even on uneven surfaces.

Advanced Technology

Multiple ride modes, regenerative braking, and a comprehensive TFT display provide a tailored riding experience and keep the rider informed about the bike’s status.

Must-Ride Routes in Australia

We are SO lucky to have some of the most breathtaking and diverse routes in the world. Australia really is the adventurer’s playground. Here’s a list of the most

  1. Great Ocean Road, Victoria

Possibly the most iconic route Australia has to offer, the Great Ocean Road offers incredible coastal views and a winding road that’s great fun to ride. Stretching over 240 km, this route takes you through charming towns, lush rainforests, and past the famous Twelve Apostles rock formations, what’s left of them anyway.

  1. The Nullarbor Plain, Western Australia – South Australia

For those seeking a hard adventure, the Nullarbor Plain offers an expansive, almost otherworldly landscape. Spanning over 1,100 km between South Australia and Western Australia, this route is a test of endurance and a showcase of Australia’s vastness.

“A 1,100 km desert stretch on an electric motorbike? Tell him he’s dreamin’”, I hear you say? Well, it’s been done. In 2022 we wrote a story about Ed Darmanin who rode his Harley Livewire across the Nullabor plains.

If you decide to tackle the Nullabor plains on an electric motorcycle you should definitely read Ed’s story. But, if a Harley Livewire can do it, we have no doubts the Experia can.

  1. Tasmania’s East Coast

Tasmania’s East Coast provides a mix of beautiful beaches, historic sites, and scenic roads. The route from Hobart to Launceston, passing through places like Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires, is approximately 300 km and offers an incredible range of experiences in a relatively short stretch.

  1. The Great Alpine Road, Victoria

Snaking through the Victorian Alps, the Great Alpine Road offers a challenge of winding roads, combined with spectacular mountain scenery. The route covers about 339 km and is ideal for riders looking to test their skills while enjoying some breathtaking views.

  1. Cairns to Cape York, Queensland

For a more rugged adventure, the route from Cairns to Cape York is a must. This is a motorcycle roadtrip that is close to AEMC’s hearts – Alex and Tobin recently completed it after years of planning. Stunning scenery, nature and night skies – this really is a bucket list ride. Covering around 1,200 km, this journey takes you through tropical rainforests and remote outback regions, ending at the northernmost tip of Australia. Like the Nullabor stretch, you’re unlikely to find a fast charging station that far north, so patience is a necessity. Most campsites have power so you will be able to slow charge overnight and ride upto 300KMs per day at speeds of less than 100km/h. Some of the breakout routes like Frenchman’s, the Telegraph Track and the Starkie are really only for lightweight dirt bikes – not full adventure touring motorcycles so you may struggle to concur those on an Experia. But the same goes for most adventure touring motorcycles like the GS, Multistrada, Africa Twin, etc. Tobin came across a very sweaty and dehydrated BMW GS1250 rider stuck at the bottom of a river crossing. It took 4 guys to help him get his bike up the bank to continue along the Frenchman’s Track. If he didn’t get help – he could’ve been there for a very long time!

  1. Lamington National Park, Queensland

Perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway. Winding up and down the rainforest caldera of Lamington National Park is a riding experience like no other. With towns dotted along its roads and plenty of accommodation and pretty much excellent weather all year round, the Experia is right at home on this adventure.

Rider Tips for Touring on the Energica Experia

Touring on an electric motorcycle like the Energica Experia requires some planning, especially in terms of charging. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth journey:

Plan Your Route: Identify charging stations along your route and plan your stops accordingly. Apps and websites that map out charging infrastructure can be invaluable. Word to the wise, if fast charging stations aren’t available, you might have to just accept that a full charge could take at least 12 hours. However, if you plan on making overnight stops, all the better.

Carry Essential Gear: Pack light but ensure you have essentials like a portable charger, tire repair kit, and emergency supplies. The Experia’s ample storage space makes it easier to carry what you need.

Stay Informed: Use the bike’s TFT display and connectivity features to monitor your battery status and range. Adjust your ride mode to maximize efficiency when necessary.

Take Breaks: Long rides can be taxing, so schedule regular breaks to rest and recharge both yourself and your bike. This is also a great opportunity to explore the local attractions and scenery.

And finally,

Forget Everything you Know: Electric motorcycles last longer on slower speeds, that’s the nature of the technology. With petrol bikes you’re probably used to getting more mileage on longer stretches of highway, forget that and reverse it. Letting yourself travel at a lower speed across long distances will help you squeeze extra distance out of the battery, a painstaking, however useful trick if you’re ever nervous of making it to your next charging stop.

The Energica Experia is the ultimate companion for long-distance adventures. Ready to explore the open road? Book a test ride today and discover how the Energica Experia can transform your touring experience. Whether you’re navigating coastal highways or traversing remote outback trails, the Experia promises a ride like no other.
